Non-metallic abrasives are widely used in various sandblasting scenarios, with significant differences in effects. The key considerations for choosing non-metallic abrasives are as follows:

2.Processing objective:  for cleaning, polishing, deburring, or paint & rust removal?

3.Surface requirements:  smooth surface, matte finish, or surface strengthening needed?

4.Environmental protection requirements: Consider whether the abrasive is easy to recycle and the dust emission situation.

The commonly used non-metallic abrasives and their application  are as follows:

1. Garnet sand

Application scenarios: Pipe sandblasting, large steel component sandblasting, ship cleaning sandblasting, surface preparation before anode treatment, etc.

Effect characteristics: garnet sandblasting removes oxide scale, rust, oil stains, etc. from the surface of the workpiece through high-speed impact, forming a uniform and rough angular surface on the surface, significantly improving the adhesion and corrosion resistance of the coating. It has the advantages of high hardness, high density, good toughness, low fragmentation rate, and reusability. It can also effectively reduce dust and usage costs, and is widely used in shipbuilding, petrochemicals, automotive manufacturing, steel structure anti-corrosion and other fields. Some garnets may have associated minerals such as green tourmaline, which will affect the purity of garnet and thereby affect the sandblasting efficiency.

2. Copper slag

Copper slag sandblasting is mainly used for rust removal, paint removal, oxidation layer removal and surface beautification on metal surfaces. Its application scenarios include surface treatment of new and old steel materials, pre-treatment of coated workpieces, and cleaning burrs from castings or machined parts, etc.

The effect is to form uniform and fine concave and convex surfaces on the surface, increasing the bonding strength with coatings/dip coatings, revealing the original color of the metal and improving the smoothness, while also improving the mechanical properties of the parts and achieving different matte effects on the surface. It should be noted that copper slag is prone to fragmentation, and during the treatment process, dust is easily formed, making it unsuitable for recycling and reuse.

3.Glass beads

Applicable scenarios:: Suitable for workpieces with high requirements for surface smoothness, such as cleaning, deburring and surface treatment of aluminum alloys and stainless steel, as well as polishing of medical devices.

Effect features: Can form a uniform matte surface, reduce surface stress, and have good corrosion resistance and cleaning ability.

4. Walnut shell grit

Applicable scenarios: Used for mild deburring, cleaning and polishing of precision parts, as well as surface treatment of electronic components and molds.

Effect features: It is a very soft abrasive material with minimal damage to the substrate. It is suitable for materials prone to scratching and does not generate dust during cleaning.

5. Alumina oxide & Silicon Carbide

Application scenarios: Suitable for rough processing of metal surfaces, removing welding slag, rust, and old paint layers, as well as performing surface pre-treatment for subsequent coating.

Effect characteristics: High hardness, strong cutting force, capable of completing heavy cleaning tasks quickly and efficiently, and enhancing surface adhesion.
